Dear Sara,

Is a Gila monster actually a monster?

– Best wishes,

Dear Tina –

Gila Monster, reptiles, poisonous lizards

No, a Gila monster is a large, venomous lizard native to thesouthwestern United
Statesand northwestern Mexico. There is only one other venomous lizard in North
America, the Mexican beaded lizard. Despite being poisonous, Gila monsters are
fairlyslow-moving and don’t represent much danger to human beings, unless a
humanbeing deliberately provokes one of the lizards.
