I have heard that tomatoes are believed to have supernatural properties. Really?
– Skeptically, Jason L.
Well, in 1590s England, herbalist John Gerard believed tomatoes were poisonous, perhaps due to the fact that it is the fruit/berry of the deadly nightshade plant (the leaves are poisonous). The Native Americans who dwelled in Pueblos believed that ingesting tomato seeds could give one the ability to predict the future. Tomatoes are believed to have been part of the Aztec diet as far back as 500 B.C. It took a roundabout route to North America: Tomatoes were originally cultivated in South and Central America, went to Europe and Southeast Asia with the Spaniards and Italians, with immigrants bringing it to what is now the United States.
