Top Ten Sci-Fi & Fantasy Couples

Top 10 Sci-Fi & Fantasy Couples
by June K. Williams

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. As geeks and gamers have the urge to merge as much as mundanes or muggles I thought I’d weigh in on the top SF & F couples. Missing will be slash couples that are so popular among a certain segment of fans. So if you are looking for Harry/Draco, Legolas/Aragon, Kirk/Spock or Xena/Gabrielle you won’t find them on this list.

Farscape

10. John Crichton and Aeryn Sun.
Farscape only had four seasons but ohmygoodness did those two raise the temperature. I don’t know about you but I love it when a strong, confident woman is shown as also capable of being sexy and loving. Then add the all American appeal of John Crichton who was at once a brilliant scientist, a warrior and something of a diplomat. Not a bad duo to travel through the Unchartered Territories.

9. Samantha Carter and Jack O’Neil.
Stargate SG1 managed to write these characters with enough UST (unresolved sexual tension) to last all ten seasons.

Edward and Bella

8. Edward Cullen and Bella Swan
(Twilight Series) For those of you who see those names and have an automatic gag reflex, well I understand but there is no doubt that they rank high in fan appeal. My supernatural couple in my teen years was Barnabas Collins and Josette so who am I to cast aspersions on today’s supernatural teen heartthrobs?

7.
John Sheridan and Delenn.
(Babylon 5) Delenn is an ambassador from Minbari. Minbari, are a humanoid race that have certain differences from humans including physical attributes. In an effort to bridge the rift between species Delenn entered a cocoon and emerged as a Minbari/Human hybrid. Her species – given bone crest remained on her head but now was accompanied by hair that was elegantly set off by the crest. She as the Minbari Ambassador and John as the Human Commander of the Babylon 5 station make an unlikely but highly likable couple. I always wondered how they slept together as Humans tend to sleep horizontally and Minbari sleep at a 45 degree angle.

6. Hoban Washburne and Zoe Washburne.
(Firefly) Zoe was the First Mate of Serenity. She was strong, loyal and smart. Wash was the pilot of the Serenity. He had a rough upbringing but is also loyal, funny and very, very good at his job. Fortunately for them the no fraternizing rule is mostly a military thing. Not that workplace romances can’t carry as much peril as pleasures. These two started off at odds but fell in love and married. Their love came to a tragic end but just in case you haven’t seen all the episodes yet, I won’t spoil it by telling you exactly what happens.

Leia and Han Solo

5. Leia Organa and Han Solo.
(Star Wars) Princess Lei and Han first meet in a rescue situation Han Solo was only one of her rescuers and no romance took root till they were fleeing the Empire in the Millennium Falcon. While hiding in the stomach of a space slug, she finally shares a kiss with the roguish smuggler and their romance really began. Not until the post trilogy novels did things really heat up with this couple.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

4. Buffy and Spike. Buffy and Angel.
(Buffy the Vampire Slayer) As long as there are fans of this show there will be a division between them as to who is Buffy’s True Love. Angel was her first love on the show. She was a 16 year old California High School student. He was a 241 year old Irish vampire. Creepy. Also, they could not have sex without him losing his soul and becoming the relentlessly evil Angelus. Spike meets her a few years later. He is a hundred years or so younger than Angel but still, creepy. He began all Grrrr…but even before he was chipped there was an attraction between Spike and Buffy. Their passion was so great it literally brought down the house. Spike loved her so much that he went on a quest to regain his soul. He passed the trials, regained his soul, and died a hero. In the end neither proved to be her True Love. She moved on.

3. Eric Northman and Sookie. Bill Compton and Sookie.
(True Blood/The Southern Vampire Mysteries) Once again you have one girl and many suitors. Bill is passionate, old fashioned and believes himself to be in love with her. He has also lied to her and betrayed her although he believed he had no other choice. Eric is also passionate, a lot more modern when it comes to women and is thoughtful. Personally I hopes she ends up with someone who has a pulse.

Doctor Who

2. The Doctor and Rose Tyler.
(Doctor Who) The Doctor is a 900 year old Time Lord. Rose is a 20 year old working class, relatively uneducated shop assistant. Not much of an equal pairing. Still they make each other happy. She roused him from the kind of morose mood only someone who is 900 years old is fully capable of. He took her on a tour of time and space, resulting in broadening her horizons and edifying her mind. It had to end of course. No happy ever after for The Doctor. Many happy moments though.

battlestar galactica

1. Admiral William Adama and President Laura Roslin.
(Battlestar Galactica 2004-2009) When the television series began Adama and Roslin were at odds with each other. He could only see the military view of things, she as an educator and a female civilian looked at things from a humanistic perspective. Over time they learned from each other and a grudging respect led to a kind of friendship. They were both very damaged people but somehow they were each what the other needed. Two strong and passionate people who found that the capacity to accept and even rejoice in their differences.

Robert Heinlein, one of Science Fiction’s respected authors once said, “Love is the condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.” Whether you are a geek, a gamer or a garden variety mundane Jersey Shore viewer, the capacity to love is what makes life worth living. Don’t be afraid to let someone know you love them. Valentine’s Day as we now know it is a day for declaring what is in your heart. Risky business? Sure, but worth the risk.

June Williams
June, also known affectionately as Buzzy Lady #2, has been with the company since it began. She was born in Manhattan, raised in the Bronx (the first 12 years in the heart of the south Bronx) and spent most of her adult life living in Westchester County N.Y.

Always a Science Fiction fan and dabbler in writing she had thought herself too practical to pursue a career in the field. Before coming to Buzzy she spent over 30 years in the travel industry, then one day decided it was time to spread her wings and plunge into publishing. Everyone she knew thought she had gone slightly daft but as this was not the first time they had expressed that opinion she took the red pill anyway and now spends all of her time putting together projects that make each day a pleasure.
