Dear Sara,

Rumor has it the George R.R. Martin modeled Game of Thrones after the real War of the Roses, is that true?

Thanks,
Game Of Thrones Fan

Dear Game Of Thrones Fan,

Yes, in part. Like all good writers George R.R. Martin did a good amount of research before begining his novels but as his is a work of fiction he was able to cherry pick through history and only use the parts he found to be of particular interest. Even then he did not just record history but made these his own. Much as D.B. Weiss is doing on the television version of the books. A shared vision perhaps but it is where it diverges that makes it more fun.

The “First Men” approximately correspond to the Celts. Th Andals and their seven kingdoms are pretty close in nature to the Saxons and their kingdoms in England. The Targaryens are very like the Normans (without the dragons of course). House Lancaster sort of matches up to House Lannister while House York does the same to to House Stark. The Dothraki being nomadic tribesmen who swoop out of anywhere to devastate and loot would probably be the Huns but in later centuries could be the Vandals. These things need not match up precisely.

Dear Sara,

Are there any Watchers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer that aren’t English? Weren’t the first Slayers created in Africa? Shouldn’t there be Watchers from all over the world, not just Great Britain?

Faith in Willow

Dear Faith,

There were Watchers from many countries and cultures but both Rupert Giles and Wesley Wyndham Pryce were sent to Buffy from the Watchers Council of Britain. The Council was founded by the Shadow Men who created the Slayers in ancient Africa but at some point they had to have migrated and being in Great Britain they adopted the language and apparently also a lot of native Britains into the organization. Buffy’s first Watcher was an American (Merrick), Andrew Wells who was part of the Trio that plagued Buffy and the Scoobies for a season later trained to become a Watcher and was very much an American, Roger “Sam” Zabuto who was Kendra’s Watcher was from Jamaica.

Severus Snape - Living Or Dead?

Friday, April 20th, 2012

Dear Sara,

Severus Snape, living or dead? I’ve read the books, seen the movies, read everything JK Rowlings has said about Snape and I ask you, is Severus Snape alive?

SnapeSnogger

Dear SnapeSnogger

In my opinion Snapes lives. He was a double agent, extremely paranoid AND he was a potions master, not just any potions master but one that was able to come up with an antidote for Nagini’s bite in time to save Arthur Weasley. The idea that he would not always carry anti snake venom potion with him is ludicrous. Even first years knew a potion master could “put a stopper on death”. His body was never found and buried. When Nagini was killed there were no leftovers of Headmaster Snape found spilling out of him. His portrait never appeared in the Headmaster’s Office as all are supposed to at the death of a Headmaster of Hogwarts. If the castle had never recognized him as a Headmaster it would not have permitted him to use the Headmaster’s Office while he was there. It had locked out Dolores Umbridge despite the Ministry having appointed her to head the school.

Are There Any X-Men Among The Avengers?

Monday, April 16th, 2012

Dear Sara,

I was wondering are there are any X-Men among the Avengers?

Kyle B.

Dear Kyle,

The release of the new Avengers movie on May 4th has gotten a lot people thinking about Marvel. Then there is IMHO the ill-conceived and widely embraced X-Men Vs Avengers 12 issue bi-weekly mini-series which is currently underway. In any case, there are few that snuck over the line. Beast served with the “secret” Avengers, although that was sort of on the QT. Storm and Wolverine are two prominent X-Men that are now also Avengers.

Dear Sara,

Why didn’t the Goa’uld Lords attack Earth after the rebellion? Even with the Chapai-ai buried they could have sent ships, right?

Dana H.

Dear Dana,

They could have Dana but as you pointed out they didn’t. First reason would be that Ra already mined most if not all the Naquadah that was on Earth. He wasn’t on Earth for the scenery. Plus there were wars going on both among the System Lords and some of the other Elder races (Asgard,Ancients,Furlings and Nox). They just disregarded the Tauri as being unimportant. Laugh was on them :)

Game Of Thrones Question

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

Dear Sara,

What is the real deal with Lord Varysr in Game of Thrones? Is he really only loyal to the realm as he claims or is he trying to bring back Targaryen rule? What would be the benefit to him either way?

Ed Kovacks

Dear Ed,

Varysr, Master of Whisperers, is said to be a eunuch with no family, no lands, nothing to leave behind. He does wield some power behind the throne and he understands the importance of discretion. He first rose to his position under Targaryen rule but he also suffered under them. My guess is he wants to see a ruler on the Iron Throne who is strong enough to keep the nation from dissolving into anarchy and capable of repelling invaders. I also believe he has a need to avenge himself if he was forcibly castrated. The pain and humiliation of castration coupled with a permanent inabilty to have children has been known to create a need for payback. Petyr Baelish had a conversation with Varysr where he offered him young boys in his brothel. Wether that was to torment Varys or if it implies that not all of his equpment was removed is a moot question.

Monday, March 19th, 2012

Dear Sara,

Are any of the propulsion systems used in science fiction books and films actually used to power space craft in the real world?
