Jim Butcher, The Dresden Files, Harry Dresden, Buzzy MultimediaBy now I am sure everyone knows how much I adore The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. However, for those of you who just landed on this planet and are unaware… The Dresden Files are a series of books written by novelist extraordinaire Jim Butcher. The series is centered on the main character, Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden, Chicago’s only P.I. wizard.

Jemma 7729 by Phoebe Wray

Jemma 7729
Author: Phoebe Wray
Publisher: Edge Science Fiction and Fantasy
ISBN-10: 1894063406
ISBN-13: 978-1894063401
Rating: 4.8/10

One might wonder what a book about a butt-kicking, gun toting female rebelling against the male-dominated patriarchy is doing with a 4.8 rating. Simple. It’s a great idea. But it is a great idea executed poorly. While Wray’s anguished, nonconformist main character is sympathetic and believable (for the most part) the two dimensional plot and the ham-handed supporting cast render it less than ideal.

Harry In Hot Water:
or why is my shower cold and my ice cream warm?

Physics in The Dresden Files and how a wizards’ life might be made more comfortable.

jim butcher, the dresden files, harry dresden, buzzy multimediaHaving read sci-fi and fantasy all of my life, I am always fascinated when the author goes to such trouble as to try make the work believable rather than just depend upon the suspension of disbelief by the reader. Jim Butcher has woven a most cohesive Dresdenverse out of what has always been such diverse lore of the supernatural, occult, and fantasy realms. Most of the authors who do put forth the effort to make their worlds work, don’t discuss it openly within the work, but just let it be there humming in the background of the story. Jim Butcher is different that way and he let’s us in on how things tick. Butcher’s characters are constantly acknowledging the harmonies and conflicts between the laws of physics and the laws of magic. It set my mind to wondering how and why certain things work and at times do not work within the carefully crafted structure of Harry Dresden’s world.

Threshold
Author: Caitlin Kiernan
Publisher: ROC
ISBN-10: 045146124X
ISBN-13: 978-0451461247
Rating: 8/10

There are few things to say about Caitlin Kiernan. Few bad things, that is. Since her debut novel, “The Five of Cups“, fifteen years ago, she has consistently delivered original and spine-tingling prose. Threshold is no different. Despite its short length it is packed with enough twists and turns to satisfy any insomniac. Yet the novel isn’t without its issues. However, on balance, the pluses far outweigh the minuses.
