Dear Sara,

Is it true that PSYCHO and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE are based on the same source material?

– Barry W.

Dear Barry,

Not only is this true, but the source material is historical rather than fictional. Edward Theodore “Ed” Gein, 1906-1984, was a Wisconsin man found guilty of two murders, grave robbery and making keepsakes from the crimes. He was tried for a single murder, that of hardware store owner Bernice Worden, found to be legally insane and spent the rest of his life in a mental institution. In addition to PSYCHO and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, Gein is reportedly the inspiration for the James Gumb character in THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS – plus many, many ripoffs.
