It’s 2020 and the boxing world has been taken over by fight-to-the-death robot boxing in the film Real Steel. But while the plot is about robot boxing on the surface, this film is really about the relationship between a father and his estranged son.
Charlie (Hugh Jackman) is an ex-boxer who now works as a robot fight promoter. Charlie is down on his luck at the beginning of the film, having lost his robot Ambush in a fight to carnival owner and promoter Ricky (Kevin Durand). As Charlie had gambled that Ambush would win the fight, he’s left without a robot and in debt to Ricky.
Just after he’s lost Ambush in the fight, Charlie finds out that his ex-girlfriend and mother of his boy, Max (Dakota Goyo), has died. Max’s aunt and her rich husband want custody of Max, and Charlie works out a deal with her to sign Max over for $100,000 but he has to spend the summer with Max to earn the cash. Neither father nor son is that happy with the idea of spending time together, but they discover a common passion in robot boxing. Charlie and Max go together to collect Charlie’s latest robot, Noisy Boy, but their hopes for success are dashed when Noisy Boy is destroyed in its first fight.
However, things look up for the pair when Max finds an old sparring robot called Atom, which can withstand a lot of damage and is capable of mimicking its owner’s actions. He persuades his dad that they should rebuild Atom and make him into a great fighter. During the process, Max and Charlie bond far more than either of them ever expected and together they take Atom further than they’d ever dreamed possible.
