Olympus Has Fallen

Director: Antoine Fuqua
Writers: Creighton Rothenberger, Katrin Benedikt
Stars: Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Dylan McDermott, Finley Jacobsen, Rick Yune, Angela Bassett, Melissa Leo
Thriller / Action-Adventure

movie review

Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) is a secret service agent and the president (Aaron Eckhart) can’t stand the sight of him. So he’s stuck behind a desk, moldering away, frustrated. But he has mad skills (a handy thing), and a strong sense of loyalty.

When something goes terribly, terribly wrong, Mike is in the right place at the right time, and he dives in posthaste to do his part and set things straight. Welcome to Antoine Fugua’s Olympus Has Fallen.

This movie is really uneven. Good performances, but some plot issues.

good day die hard, bruce willis

It’s been a few years, and Police Detective Lieutenant John McClane is a bit older and more shopworn around the edges, but otherwise unchanged. His people skills haven’t improved much, though. But still, it’s definitely A Good Day to Die Hard.

It’s been a while since John saw his son Jack, and they didn’t part on the best of terms. A check reveals that Jack is in serious trouble–in Moscow! After a quick hug to his daughter Lucy, McClane Sr. hies off to Mother Russia to rescue his son and bring him home again.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters - Movie Review

Director: Tommy Wirkola
Writers: Tommay Wirkola, Dante Harper
Stars: Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Peter Stomare, Famke Janssen, Pihla Viitala, Bjorn Sundquist, Thomas Mann
Action-Adventure

Hansel and Gretel, movie Review

Two Bond girls and an Avenger–Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is an over-the-top action/adventure romp dressed in lots of black leather.

It begins with a simple recap of the fairy tale we all know and love, including a truly delectable candy cottage and a really creepy witch. But that “incident” led to grown-up Gretel (Gemma Arterton) and Hansel (Jeremy Renner) as kick-ass bounty hunters, traveling the countryside, killing witches. Gretel is smart and sassy, and Hansel is quieter, content to be her wingman. They are a solid team.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Movie Review

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Director: Peter Jackson
Writers: Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Peter Jackson, Guillermo del Toro, J.R.R. Tolkien (novel)
Stars: Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Andy Serkis, Graham McTavish, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, Christorpher Lee, Sylvester McCoy, Elijah Wood, Ian Holm
Epic Fantasy Adventure

hobbit, movie review

An Unexpected Journey begins with a hauntingly familiar theme*, leading into a prologue that could have been a missing scene from The Fellowship of the Ring. There is a clever segue to make it clear that Martin Freeman is playing a younger version of Ian Holm’s Bilbo from The Lord of the Rings films.

I was at a midnight showing in a not terribly populated area, and yet there were six, count ’em six, showings (including 2D, 3D, and HFR 3D) in that first half hour. Judging by the crowds, all of them were sold out, too.

The novel The Hobbit was written before The Lord of the Rings –it is a simpler, lighter story. In adapting it the screen, Peter Jackson faced the dual challenge of handling a prequel after a successful sequel and trying to please both fans of the original material and fans of the previous movies. Not an easy task, by any means.

Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 - Movie Review

Let’s get this out of the way: I read the Twilight books years back when they first came out, and I am not a fan. But I dutifully attended the marathon on opening day, just so I could tell you all about the newest offering. Some of my comments are about just the last movie, some encompass the entire series, putting the last movie in that context.

Breaking Dawn Part 2 picks up right where Part I left off, with Bella (Kristen Stewart) waking up as a newborn vampire.

Skyfall - Movie Review

Stars: Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Bérénice Marlohe, Albert Finney, Ben Whishaw, Rory Kinnear
James Bond Film

Skyfall, Movie Review

This one starts with a bang. There’s a chase scene right off the bat in Istanbul, including cars, motorcycles, and a train. Later on there’s action in London, Shanghai, Macáu, and Scotland. Bond, as always, is a traveling man.

At the heart of this film, the very existence of MI-6′s Secret Service is threatened. There are those who that think old-style espionage has gone the way of the dodo. “M” is determined to fight them every step of the way.

Skyfall delves into the background of both Bond and “M”, filling in the bits and pieces and giving some of the motivation behind what makes these characters tick.

There are plots within plots within plots. In other words, a pretty standard Bond story. And the ending is heart-rending.

Movie Review

The Man with the Iron Fists, Movie Review

The Man with the Iron Fists is RZA’s homage to Saturday afternoon bad kung fu movies. It’s hyper-violent, full of overly explicit gore that really didn’t add anything to the film. There are pieces of several interesting movies here, but they don’t really fit together into a cohesive whole.

Writers: David Mitchell (novel). For screen: Lana Wachowski & Tom Tykwer & Andy Wachowski
Stars: Tom Hanks, Hallie Berry, Hugo Weaving, Jim Broadbent,Jim Sturgess,Doona Bae,Susan Sarandon

Movie Review

Cloud Atlas, Tom Hanks

“Our lives are not our own, we are bound to others, past and present. And by each crime and every kindness, we birth our future.” (Cloud Atlas - Film)

“Power, time, gravity, love. The forces that really kick ass are all invisible.” (Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell )

Cloud Atlas is not one but six stories whose storylines are tendrils interlaced and woven together to create a history of sorts. We move from from the Pacific of 1849 through post apocolyptic Earth where valley people are living a primitive life with the threat of extinction ever present. The ending, like the very beginning is somewhere else entirely.
