Dear Sara –

In comic books and literary metaphors, I’ve been reading a lot about “the song of the Siren.” Apart from the noise given by emergency vehicles, what exactly is a Siren?

Dear Ernest –

In Greek mythology, Sirens were beautiful women (not mermaids) who used their irresistible singing voices to cause sailors to shipwreck upon rocks. The Sirens were believed to be fathered by the river god Achelous upon several of the nine Muses. In Roman mythology, the Sirens are the daughters of the sea god Phorcys. Many legends suggest that for the Sirens to survive, all those who heard their song had to die, either by leaping into the sea and drowning in trying to reach the Sirens, or else torn to pieces by the Sirens themselves. Some versions of the mythology endow the Sirens with wings, birds’ legs, feathers or some combination thereof.
