Zombies, Gods and Voodoo

They come out of the grave, products of the Devil, witchcraft or experiments gone horribly wrong, stalking us as a hound stalks its prey until no one is immune from their quest for brains or souls. The fear of zombies is so engrained in us that they have been immortalized in movies and popular culture dating back several decades. Yet the reality is zombies-or at least the zombie myth-has been around much longer. In fact, they are said to predate organized religion itself. Though the origin of the zombie myth is as murky as ancient tales of old, scholars and novelists have been mining the depths of recorded knowledge, inspired by the mystery surrounding these strange beings.

The Truth about Vampires

Not a lot of people can say that their parents brag about what their children do for a living, but I don’t have that problem. My dad introduces me as his daughter the famous author and my mom proudly tells folks, when asked, that her daughter is the vampirologist they saw on Discovery Channel.

Flesh & Blood or Digital Gaming

All children, except gamers, grow up.

In the beginning there was gaming and it was good. We had character sheets, an array of dice, the occasional painted figurine to represent our guy, and a table around which we sat, looking at one another, laughing, killing, and saving the world every Friday night, like clockwork. Truly these were the best of times. Each of us remembers when we started gaming, and who “turned us onto it,” because like any good addiction, you don’t just wake up one morning and decide today is the day that I will start a new hobby/lifestyle.

The Many Faces of Fantasy Fiction

The Many Faces of Fantasy Fiction

“Fantasy is the impossible made probable. Science Fiction is the improbable made possible. “Rod Serling creator of the Twighlight Zone
“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”-Arthur C. Clarke’s third law
“Any sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology.”-Larry Niven

Fantasy in fiction is hard to define because the boundaries keep blurring. When you see the words Fantasy Fiction many people conjure up imagery of faraway kingdoms. Something that looks 8th century, perhaps an even earlier period like the Bronze Age. Lands filled with castles, dragons, unicorns and all manner of wondrous mythical beasties. Realms populated with nobles and not-so-nobles, wizards, witches (not Wiccans), some dressed in silks, lace, furs and jewels others in tatters. Domains where mighty capped sword wielding warriors stand ready with loins girded to save damsels in distress or embark on quests at once noble and dangerous.

The Role of Weres In The Mercy Thompson Series by Patricia Briggs

Werewolves Are Cuddly…Not!
(The Role of Weres In The Mercy Thompson Series by Patricia Briggs)

The hoopla over the Mercy Thompson trilogy has got me thinking. No, I’m not planning to harm myself so that I can be turned into a werewolf and become an Alpha male (although judging by the cover art of the books, Mercedes is quite a catch). With all the attention in the trilogy on the role of pack relations and Mercy’s own relationships with Adam and Samuel, I had to know, how much of the sexual and emotional chemistry in the books was good ol’ deductive reasoning and how much of it was literary sizzle? Armed with this burning question, I did some sleuthing of my own. Armed with a day’s worth of gumshoe research at the local public library, and aided by my trusty sidekick Google, I came up with some titillating answers…only it’s not exactly the type of thing the mechanic herself would want to hear.

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE A GIRL GAMER?

by Theresa Bane

Someone asked me “what’s it like to be a girl gamer?” Odd question, but I suppose fair enough. At the risk of sounding like some old coot, we chicks had it a lot harder back in my day. Gaming was virtually unheard of, and the only store in the mall that carried gaming stuff was located on the bottom level of the mall in a mazelike area. “Kathy’s Gaming Shop,” which later changed its name to “The Dungeon Masters’” was the only place you could meet, game, and shop all in one place. Kathy became a surrogate mother to about 100 kids and knew us all by name. She more or less babysat us Friday evenings and from mall’s opening to close all day Saturday. She was a sweet lady, and now nicely retired on the countless dimes and dollars we kids willingly gave her hand over fist back in the day. But, I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me start at the beginning.

T-Shirts Put the Pop In Culture

Once free of the workplace most people I know like to kick back and wear t-shirts, jeans, sweats and shorts. Characters in television series, movies and books on the other hand nearly all seem to look like graduates of What Not To Wear. Nearly, but not all.
