Harry Dresden In Hot Water: Physics In The Dresden Files Universe

Harry In Hot Water:
or why is my shower cold and my ice cream warm?

Physics in The Dresden Files and how a wizards’ life might be made more comfortable.

jim butcher, the dresden files, harry dresden, buzzy multimediaHaving read sci-fi and fantasy all of my life, I am always fascinated when the author goes to such trouble as to try make the work believable rather than just depend upon the suspension of disbelief by the reader. Jim Butcher has woven a most cohesive Dresdenverse out of what has always been such diverse lore of the supernatural, occult, and fantasy realms. Most of the authors who do put forth the effort to make their worlds work, don’t discuss it openly within the work, but just let it be there humming in the background of the story. Jim Butcher is different that way and he let’s us in on how things tick. Butcher’s characters are constantly acknowledging the harmonies and conflicts between the laws of physics and the laws of magic. It set my mind to wondering how and why certain things work and at times do not work within the carefully crafted structure of Harry Dresden’s world.

Evil Hat Productions
An Interview with Fred Hicks Co-Creator of The Dresden Files RPG game

In the awesomeness that is Buzzy Multimedia, I was asked to do an interview with none other than Fred Hicks, the madcap genius behind the RPG “Spirit Of The Century” but he is also the man, myth, and legendary driving force who will bring to all of us The Dresden Files: RPG. As an avid gamer, I could hardly wait to pick his brain about Harry in my favorite medium.

Oh How I Love the Sci Fi Channel,
Let me Count the Ways

© Buzzy Multimedia

When I was a little kid, back when dinosaurs ruled the Earth, if I misbehaved when afternoon rolled around, my mom would make me sit in my little chair and watch soap operas with her. Where’s a social worker when you need one? I never understood why they were called “soaps,” and I still don’t to be perfectly honest, but there was one I kind of remember because it had a vampire in it. I don’t have any childhood memories of the show itself except that my mom would call her girlfriends after and say “mmmm, Barnabas.”

You know what a werewolf is. Everyone does. The academic word for werewolf is “Lycanthrope”. A Greek word because Greek - even before Latin - was the language of scholars.

I’m Just Wild About Harry!

I’m Just Wild about Harry!
Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden & His Love Life
© Buzzy Multimedia

jim butcher, the dresden files, harry dresdenNOTE: If you are a fan of the Dresden Files and are not currently “caught up,” why the heck not?! Go, get caught up, and then come back and read my blog. I’ll wait, but don’t dawdle. Jeeze Louise…

I was raised to be a reader. Both my parents were readers. My mom taught all of us kids how to read before we attended out first day of school. We had weekly trips to the library, and bedrooms full of books. To this day, my brothers and I are still readers. And guess what, so are their kids. Ooohhooo It’s the circle, the circle of life!

It’s a rare thing to find an author you like. When you do, you don’t ever want to let him go, you hope that the book you just read was his 72nd because you love his writing so much you want to rush out get the other books he wrote and immerse your entire self in his imaginary word.

I feel that I was blessed the day I discovered Jim Butcher’s series The Dresden Files, and if you read my blogs you know me-I’m a hard sell and a snarky bee-och. I was hooked from page one. I stayed up all night and read it till my eyes bled. Then I wiped away the blood, used a bottle of Visine and kept right on going. Next day I went to the book store and jumped for joy when I saw that there were three other books I had not yet read AND another coming out the following month. La la la Heaven, I’m in heaven….
