MARY McDONNELL ON “MAJOR CRIMES” & “BATTLESTAR GALACTICA”

By Abbie Bernstein

Mary McDonnell, Battlestar Galactica

Mary McDonnell looks very much at home on one of the sets for MAJOR CRIMES at Raleigh Studios in Los Angeles. In fact, the set is the home of her character, LAPD Captain Sharon Raydor. It’s one of the new ones that’s been built for the series, which is in its debut season on TNT, playing Mondays at 9 PM.

McDonnell originated the Raydor character as an Internal Affairs officer on THE CLOSER. When CLOSER star Kyra Sedgwick decided her seventh year on that series would be her last as Brenda Leigh Johnson, TNT approached CLOSER creator James Duff about creating a spin-off. MAJOR CRIMES therefore retains most of THE CLOSER’s cast, staff and squad room sets, with the change that Raydor is now in charge and a lot of the detectives aren’t too sure how they feel about having a former IA investigator telling them what to do.

Why Do The People In Battlestar Galactica Favor Trapezoid & Octagonal Shapes Over Square & Oblong Ones?

By Sara Bellum · Comments (0)
Thursday, May 31st, 2012

Dear Sara,

Why do the people in Battlestar Galactica favor trapezoid and octagonal shapes over square and oblong ones? Not only were the corners of their papers clipped but things like ID badges, picture frames and even monitors and TV screens seemed to be trimmed to avoid a square profile.

Thanks,
Laura W.

Dear Laura,

The original concept was to show some small but fundamental differences between the universe of BSG and our own universe. It started on the first show and continued in the new BSG. Ronald Moore who was the Executive Producer of the 21st century series said “These people just hate right angles.” In an interview that he gave to the National Geographic he called it “the Davinci Code of Battlestar Galactica.” Of course that would not account for the why it was OK for them to use right angles in their architecture, machinery and even their clothing. I have a sneaking suspicion that the truth lays in a rumor about the network wanting the producers in the original series to keep production costs down. As a kind of insider joke they literally “cut corners” which in the long run cost a lot more money in time and customization.

The Madness of Gaius Baltar
A study of Battlestar Galactica’s character that people love to hate

Gaius Baltar, BSG, Battlestar Galactica

“Baltar is the crazy black sheep uncle who always comes to Thanksgiving drunk and hits on somebody’s new girlfriend…yet you always bring him back because he’s so funny.” -RDM

When we first meet Dr. Gaius Baltar he is in his element and at the top of his form. He is a brilliant successful secular humanist scientist who has access to the mainframe of the Caprican defense system. Every inch of him reeks of the narcissistic, hedonistic creature he has made himself into. It is clear that his talent for living the good life has not brought him the capacity to give or even really receive love. His ability to be a chameleon as much as his talent has given him the aptitude to pass as a whole human being at least to those he works with and the women he seduces. His current lover when the series begins is a statuesque platinum blond who he recognizes to be his equal or even superior in the field of computers. To Gaius’s amusement and even befuddlement she is also religious. This woman who is later called Caprica 6 loves him and she can see through the mask that he uses to keep people from knowing who he really is and the wall that prevents him from knowing himself. She is one of the twelve models of flesh and blood Cylons, called skinjobs by humans once their existence has been made known. Read More→
