Square Peg In A Pentagonal Hole?
Where do you fit in Harry Dresden’s world?
As we all read (or listen) to books, or watch movies, we identify ourselves with characters we find in these mental diversions. Most often the stories are from a main character’s point of view and we are supposed to identify with them primarily.
But well written and continuing works develop a greater number of in depth characters that broaden the possibilities. For The Dresden Files, having 11 books in print, there are a great many well developed and even more undeveloped, characters to echo our personal perspectives and thus identify ourselves with. In identifying ourselves with these fictional characters, we get to see a different perspective on how we deal with things. Read More→
Villains in the Dresden Files?
by Theresa Bane

If you are reading this, you probably know who Harry Dresden is. If not, he is Chicago’s only Private Investigator slash wizard. He’s in the phone book under “Wizards.” One day when I have achieved a thing called “disposable income” I am going to personally drop the 4 grand it’ll take to make a little box ad for Harry Dresden in the Chicago Yellow Pages.

By now I am sure everyone knows how much I adore The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. However, for those of you who just landed on this planet and are unaware… The Dresden Files are a series of books written by novelist extraordinaire Jim Butcher. The series is centered on the main character, Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden, Chicago’s only P.I. wizard.

Harry In Hot Water:
or why is my shower cold and my ice cream warm?
Physics in The Dresden Files and how a wizards’ life might be made more comfortable.
Having read sci-fi and fantasy all of my life, I am always fascinated when the author goes to such trouble as to try make the work believable rather than just depend upon the suspension of disbelief by the reader. Jim Butcher has woven a most cohesive Dresdenverse out of what has always been such diverse lore of the supernatural, occult, and fantasy realms. Most of the authors who do put forth the effort to make their worlds work, don’t discuss it openly within the work, but just let it be there humming in the background of the story. Jim Butcher is different that way and he let’s us in on how things tick. Butcher’s characters are constantly acknowledging the harmonies and conflicts between the laws of physics and the laws of magic. It set my mind to wondering how and why certain things work and at times do not work within the carefully crafted structure of Harry Dresden’s world.

NOTE: If you are a fan of the Dresden Files and are not currently “caught up,” why the heck not?! Go, get caught up, and then come back and read my blog. I’ll wait, but don’t dawdle. Jeeze Louise…
I was raised to be a reader. Both my parents were readers. My mom taught all of us kids how to read before we attended out first day of school. We had weekly trips to the library, and bedrooms full of books. To this day, my brothers and I are still readers. And guess what, so are their kids. Ooohhooo It’s the circle, the circle of life!
It’s a rare thing to find an author you like. When you do, you don’t ever want to let him go, you hope that the book you just read was his 72nd because you love his writing so much you want to rush out get the other books he wrote and immerse your entire self in his imaginary word.
I feel that I was blessed the day I discovered Jim Butcher’s series The Dresden Files, and if you read my blogs you know me-I’m a hard sell and a snarky bee-och. I was hooked from page one. I stayed up all night and read it till my eyes bled. Then I wiped away the blood, used a bottle of Visine and kept right on going. Next day I went to the book store and jumped for joy when I saw that there were three other books I had not yet read AND another coming out the following month. La la la Heaven, I’m in heaven….
