Supernatural: Fresh Meat is a novel based on the hit television series Supernatural and should be an exciting ride for anyone who is a fan of the Winchester brothers. For those who are not acquainted with the show, The Winchesters are a family of Hunters, destroying paranormal evil entities while traveling around the country in Dean Winchester’s hot looking badass ’67 Chevy Impala. In this world of urban fantasy the threat of the dark side is ever present and the good guys don’t always win. That is when you can even be sure who the good guys are.

As is frequently the case with Dean and Sam Winchester, the two brothers are chasing a monstrous creature that is preying upon an unsuspecting populace. To track a cannibalistic ghost they need to head out to the back country of Tahoe National Forest. In preparation, the Winchesters stop into a place to eat and see what information they can gather from the locals. The place is also a neighborhood watering hole for fellow Hunters and in next to no time they acquire more than what they had come looking for. Not only did they get intel, they meet up with Bobby Singer, who has been both friend and father figure to these young men since before their Dad died. He joins them on the mission and they are going to really need his help.

The author manages to capture the graveyard humor and boyish banter even in the middle of scary catastrophes which is the hallmark of the characters on the show. It makes them more human and that makes the situations they get into just that much more frightening.

Both Winchester boys are going through personal crises that make them more vulnerable to attack. Dean no longer possesses the rock hard certainty of faith that was once his lifeline while Sam is haunted with memories of the fires of Hell and Lucifer himself.

As with many media tie-in novels, Supernatural: Fresh Meat has a rich history of character development and world building to draw upon. Ms. Hendeson does so admirably and also adds more understanding of what makes the characters tick as well as throwing in some very engaging curves to keep the reader entertained. A must for fans of the show and a good read for people not yet familiar with the program.
