“Gentleman” Johnny Marcone vs. Tony Soprano
By Theresa Bane

Gentleman Johnny Marcone

There have been all kinds of gangsters and mob bosses who have appeared in pop-culture over the years, but I don’t think anyone has bothered to compare and contrast “Gentleman” Johnny Marcone and HBO’s Tony Soprano.

In Jim Butcher’s series, “The Dresden Files,” there is a recurring character who is a mob boss in the city of Chicago. In the short story “Even Hand,” which takes place between “Turn Coat” and “Changes,” the narrator begins the story saying, “My name is something I rarely trouble to remember, but for most of my adult life, I have been called John Marcone.” The newspapers have dubbed him with the nickname “Gentleman” because no matter the situation, he is always calm, collected, and polite.

Apart from being a powerful criminal element in the city of Chicago, Marcone has also gathered a great deal of information about the supernatural. He personally met with Dresden to see if he was “the real deal” and after exchanging a soul gaze, never doubted Harry’s magical capabilities or commitment again. Marcone has even called upon and tried to hire the private detective to combat the supernatural forces reducing his profit margin or causing undo attention to be turned in the direction of his criminal enterprise. As the novels go on, Marcone becomes more and more entrenched in the magical realm, utilizing this knowledgeable asset to his best advantage.

Everything You Need To Know About Bob The Skull But Were Too Lazy To Google
by Theresa Bane

bob-the-skull

If you are not familiar with the fictional character, Bob the Skull, from Jim Butcher’s “Dresden Files” series of best-selling books, what you are about to read will bring you up to speed on the character and teach you everything you need to know. I dare say, you’ll be able to carry on a conversation with a Dressie* and pass as one of us. If you’re already a fan of the “Dresden Files,” not only will this article be a good refresher for you to read and brush-up on your Bob knowledge base, but it will also help you ferret out folks who are trying to pass themselves off as fans, and therefore, cool.

Bob the Skull started his literary life as many of Butcher’s creations do—someone presented him with a challenge. Way back in the day when Butcher was unpublished and still working on pulling the pieces of the “Dresden Files” together, he realized he needed a means to explain the mechanics of magic to his readers without info-dumping. Debbie Chester, his writing teacher at the time, advised her student that by adding a character to specifically discuss the nature of magic with Harry was fine, but to be careful not to make this new character a “talking head” (a character whose sole purpose is to dispense information).

I had the privilege of being introduced to The Dresden Files by the author himself. Conestoga 2000 was not my best convention. I arrived with a headache that had me hiding in my darkened room for the first day, only emerging for soda to settle my stomach and to replenish my supply of painkillers.

“Would you like to buy my book?” the author was all alone with a card table heaped with paperbacks. He looked gawky, gangly and a bit nervous. Buying anything but the aforementioned supplies was the last thing on my mind, but there were so many books and he gave me the kind of puppy-dog look that melted even my cranky heart.

5 Reasons to Read “The Dresden Files”

By Theresa Bane

The Dresden Files, Harry Dresden

As many of you may already know, I am a professional vampirologist, that is, a mythologist who specializes in cross-cultural studies with a specialty in the folklore, history, and mythology of the vampire. To keep current and widen my knowledge base, I read a lot of research books. As awesome as I find my job to be, it does not leave me a lot of time to read for pleasure or fun. I know there are a great number of people who have this blessing, but sadly, I am not one of them.

Usually I read the first three or so chapters of a fiction book and if it does not engross me by then I waste no more time and toss it in the “bring to the book exchange” pile I keep in one corner of my living room. However, when I do find a book or series I truly enjoy I always make time to read it. My list of recommended authors are very small and not only does Jim Butcher top it, he holds the first two slots. I’ll break it down for you in a two-part blog giving you five reasons this month and five more next month.

Ghost Story Book Reveiw
by June K. Williams

ghost story, jim butcher, book review

I must admit that when I began Ghost Story I had some serious misgivings. The ending of the previous Dresden Files novel, Changes, left us with some very somber if not downright grim consequences. The only way around them would seem to negate the meaning of the story. It would be sort of like having Spock return from the Genesis planet after laying down his life to save the crew of the Enterprise. Is it still a sacrifice if he is back on the bridge of the Enterprise? Happily this proved not to be the case in Ghost Story. It just goes to show that you must trust the author if the author is Jim Butcher. Ghost Story not only deals with those consequences head on, it does so with style, sensibility and the ability to ask the Big questions without being preachy or pushy. Read More→

The Choices of “Changes”

Changes by Jim Butcher, The Dresden Files

Normally, I do not do book reviews. This blog continues my career of not doing book reviews because I have no intention of reviewing “Changes,” which, by the way was totally awesome. If you have not yet read Jim Butcher’s newest installment in the “Dresden Files”, “Changes” and plan to, stop reading at the end of this sentence, as the very next sentence is likely to contain what some would call “spoilers.” Well, maybe not the very next, but to be certain, in order to properly talk about what the hell happened in “Changes” it is impossible to do so unless at least one of these so-called spoilers are discussed. There are no Muggles in the Dresden-verse
by Theresa Bane

I know “muggles” is Harry Potter speak, but honestly, is there a better word for the folks that live in a magical world that do not have magical powers or abilities? “Woefully mundane?” “Normals?” “White bread?” “Vanilla?” “Red shirts?” In JK Rowland’s “magical world of Harry Potter” folks who are not magically inclined really are at a severe disadvantage, and quite frankly, a liability at best. They offer nothing to the world except as a symbol of ignorance, things to be rescued or saved or worked around, and that is only IF they are mentioned. The most prominent muggles in the Potter books are Vernon and Petunia Dursley, and look at them - ugly, pathetic, small-minded-self-serving cruel individuals who are raising a child to be even more hateful than them. The Dursley family represents everything that is the worst in mankind.
