harry dresden hooks up with sookie stackhouse

The holidays come ever closer, and we plan for friend and family visits (maybe even presents, and romantic trysts under the mistletoe.) I always wonder who I might know that needs a place at our table. It has long been a tradition in our family to seek out singles, and those without loved ones, and to bring them home for the holidays.

When I was in college, I drug home foreign exchange students who would have been staying in their cars. This year my daughter is bringing home the French.

I had the privilege of being introduced to The Dresden Files by the author himself. Conestoga 2000 was not my best convention. I arrived with a headache that had me hiding in my darkened room for the first day, only emerging for soda to settle my stomach and to replenish my supply of painkillers.

“Would you like to buy my book?” the author was all alone with a card table heaped with paperbacks. He looked gawky, gangly and a bit nervous. Buying anything but the aforementioned supplies was the last thing on my mind, but there were so many books and he gave me the kind of puppy-dog look that melted even my cranky heart.

The Choices of “Changes”

Changes by Jim Butcher, The Dresden Files

Normally, I do not do book reviews. This blog continues my career of not doing book reviews because I have no intention of reviewing “Changes,” which, by the way was totally awesome. If you have not yet read Jim Butcher’s newest installment in the “Dresden Files”, “Changes” and plan to, stop reading at the end of this sentence, as the very next sentence is likely to contain what some would call “spoilers.” Well, maybe not the very next, but to be certain, in order to properly talk about what the hell happened in “Changes” it is impossible to do so unless at least one of these so-called spoilers are discussed. There are no Muggles in the Dresden-verse
by Theresa Bane

I know “muggles” is Harry Potter speak, but honestly, is there a better word for the folks that live in a magical world that do not have magical powers or abilities? “Woefully mundane?” “Normals?” “White bread?” “Vanilla?” “Red shirts?” In JK Rowland’s “magical world of Harry Potter” folks who are not magically inclined really are at a severe disadvantage, and quite frankly, a liability at best. They offer nothing to the world except as a symbol of ignorance, things to be rescued or saved or worked around, and that is only IF they are mentioned. The most prominent muggles in the Potter books are Vernon and Petunia Dursley, and look at them - ugly, pathetic, small-minded-self-serving cruel individuals who are raising a child to be even more hateful than them. The Dursley family represents everything that is the worst in mankind.

The White Council of The Dresden Files
aka - the Devil you know

By Theresa Bane

magic, wizards, merlin, wicca There is an obscure Medieval Latin noun that is used by J.R.R. Tolkien Folks (big surprise there, I know) to describe his collection and usage of other people’s legends as his own, and that word is legendarium. It was a word that was originally used to describe the collective lives of the Christian Saints, but, like so many things misused this poor little word has been dug up from its grave, reanimated, and applied to refer to the council of elves and wizards in Middle Earth that contested the growing power of some castle fortress instigated by that singing elf chick (Galadriel) with more aliases than Shaun John Combs, alias “Diddy,” alias “P. Diddy,” alias “Puff Daddy,” alias “Puffy,” alias “Puff,” alias “Daddy.” Read More→

Where do you fit in Harry Dresden’s world?

Square Peg In A Pentagonal Hole?
Where do you fit in Harry Dresden’s world?

As we all read (or listen) to books, or watch movies, we identify ourselves with characters we find in these mental diversions. Most often the stories are from a main character’s point of view and we are supposed to identify with them primarily. Jim Butcher, Harry Dresden The Dresden Files But well written and continuing works develop a greater number of in depth characters that broaden the possibilities. For The Dresden Files, having 11 books in print, there are a great many well developed and even more undeveloped, characters to echo our personal perspectives and thus identify ourselves with. In identifying ourselves with these fictional characters, we get to see a different perspective on how we deal with things. Read More→
